Certamen Keeps Up!

The upper school Certamen team, advised by Ms. Sisk won the Advanced Open level at Thomas Jefferson High School. The competition includes questions about Roman culture and history and Latin language. 

Environmental Science on the Go

Upper school environmental science classes will go next week to a wastewater treatment plan to learn about the waste-to-energy process where they are burning trash. The following week, students will attend a recycling facility at PG County.

A Taste of Pi

Students at Second Street will take part in the annual Pi Day competition in the middle school. Students who memorize as many digits of 𝝅 as they can will compete on Tuesday, 3/14 for the chance to throw pies in their teachers’ faces. One representative from each grade will battle it out for the top spot, and all four of them will be able to smash a pie (of whipped cream) into the face of a (willing) teacher of their choice. 

When in Rome

Congratulations to upper school Junior grader Greisy Lopez-Serrano on being selected to attend the Paideia Institute’s Living Latin in Rome program. Previous participants included 2020 graduates Kim Montpelier and Felicity Ryan and 2019 graduates Jania Claire, DJ Okuleye, and Tate Wright.

Musical Guest

The Second Street music department welcomed Ms. Teresa Moyer to the building on Tuesday. She is a Curtis Institute graduate and was a pupil of Richard Cavendish (the first Porgy of Porgy & Bess).  She sang for the Philadelphia opera house for 26 years and was a professor of vocal performance & pedagogy at Eastern College for 30 years.  She worked with students to polish up their solos on the Mozart Requiem!

 

Wrestlers In Motion

Last weekend upper school students represented the school at the National Preps wrestling tournament tomorrow and Saturday. They worked 20 hours this weekend at one of the most premier wrestling events in the country. Participants included seniors Zemen Weldemichael, Jackson Lewis, Annika Jobanputra, Diego Rodriguez, and sophomores Julia Hallam and Leah Bleimehl.
