Touchdown!

Our varsity and junior varsity flag football teams both scored victories this week. On Tuesday, the varsity team, coached by Coach K. and Mr. Eleby-El, had an 8-6 victory over Idea Public Charter School. On Monday, the junior varsity team, coached by Mr. Coleman, had a thrilling win over E.L. Haynes, besting the other charter school 22-8.

Cross Country Races Ahead

Tuesday afternoon, at the Public Charter School Athletic Association (PCSAA) Early Bird Invitational, Latin’s cross country team swept the podium of prize winners, finishing first, second, and third. In the 5K junior Robbie Mirabello came in first, junior Max Regardie came in second, and sophomore Casey Montrey came in third. Seven of Latin’s 11 runners who participated set personal record 5k times, including Max, Sam Regardie, junior Jelani Massey, freshman Gavin Neubauer, freshman Zaire Jackson, freshman Charlie Fox-Whelpton, and freshman Scarlett Edwards. Over the weekend, on Saturday, the team trekked the tortuous hills of Leesburg, Virginia at the Oatlands Invitational. Junior and team captain Zoe Edelman placed an impressive 12th out of 365 runners in the Varsity Girls race with a 5k time of 19:34. Senior Oliver Spiva placed 43rd of 444 runners in the Varsity Boys race with a 5k time of 17:15.

The City by Foot

On Tuesday and Wednesday Ms. Grant’s DC History classes took walking tours of the city, visiting Anacostia and the U Street area of the city and considering the historical significance of both communities. Stops along the way included the African American Civil War Museum, Ben’s Chili Bowl (where they met owner Virginia Ali), the African American Civil War Memorial, the house of Duke Elington, and the Whitelaw Hotel. On Wednesday, the class went to the Frederick Douglass house and then walked to the Anacostia Arts Center and met owner and artist Luis Peralta. Other stops in Anacostia included We Act Radio and Kymone Freeman.  On the way to the radio station, the class talked about the 11th St. bridge project and the segregation lines of Uniontown. The class traces key historical events in the founding, development and growth of the district over the last two hundred years.

It’s Always Academic at Washington Latin

Washington Latin’s Quiz Bowl team will compete against Basis McLean and St. Charles High School in the first round of the “It’s Academic Competition. Seniors Harry Hirsch and Oliver Stevens will compete alongside sophomore Dylan Paglee. The club is advised by math teacher Mr. Salazar.  The first round of competition will take place Saturday the 21st at 11 a.m. at World Media Net Studio at 254 Mariner Passage at National Harbor.

Bee Careful in the Garden

Our front garden features a wide variety of plants, flowers, and vegetables, cultivated with the help of our resident Green Thumb, and Director of Facilities, Mr. Figueroa. He is also our resident Bee Keeper, raising bees and collecting honey using a box made by the gardening elective, which he fills with a homemade syrup to feed the bees.

The girls varsity soccer team won its first league game against Kipp 7-0. The team is coached by upper school math teacher Mr. Richardson. The team captains are seniors Zoe Crute, Sofia Posada, and Eva Antoine. Go Lions!
