On Tuesday and Wednesday Ms. Grant’s DC History classes took walking tours of the city, visiting Anacostia and the U Street area of the city and considering the historical significance of both communities. Stops along the way included the African American Civil War Museum, Ben’s Chili Bowl (where they met owner Virginia Ali), the African American Civil War Memorial, the house of Duke Elington, and the Whitelaw Hotel. On Wednesday, the class went to the Frederick Douglass house and then walked to the Anacostia Arts Center and met owner and artist Luis Peralta. Other stops in Anacostia included We Act Radio and Kymone Freeman.  On the way to the radio station, the class talked about the 11th St. bridge project and the segregation lines of Uniontown. The class traces key historical events in the founding, development and growth of the district over the last two hundred years.
