Science Symposium

Ms. Jost is bringing students in her Biology class to the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at Georgetown University on Thursday.  The event will feature speakers on the brain, who will analyze the intersection between psychology and neuroscience, speakers who evaluate genetic factors for diseases, and astronomers. Students will have the chance to listen to various researchers discuss everything from Alzheimer’s disease to massive stellar gamma-ray bursts.

The Man in the Mirror

Students in upper school Art I are completing complex self-portraits, mixing media from charcoal or ink. These works are based on artistic selfie photographs, highlighting their face from a complex angle. Students then carefully recreated their images to represent their appearance, mood, and facial expressions in a unique manner. Students in Ms. Stephens class range from freshmen through seniors.

The Woman Behind the Microphone

Sophomore MK Wilson was admitted to the Urban Journalism Workshop. This program, held at American University and at NPR, offers the opportunity for high school students the chance to produce their own radio, print, or video news piece for publication on NPR. The program is in its 32nd year and is sponsored by the Washington Association of Black Journalists. Wilson is the editor-in-chief of the WLPCS school newspaper, Sumus Leones.
Long Road to Hard Truth

Long Road to Hard Truth

Latin parent Robert Wilkins spoke Wednesday to students and faculty about the founding of the National Museum of African American History and culture. He will speak on the subject again for parents the night of March 15th at 7pm.  Wilkins worked as a law clerk for Judge Earl Gilliam and at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia as chief special litigation before going into private practice and becoming a Circuit Court Judge. He was part of George W. Bush’s presidential commision on the establishment of the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. His book titled Long Road to Hard Truth: The 100 Year Mission to Create the National Museum of African American History and Culture was published in 2016.

Afterschool Arts

Students in the middle school hosted an afterschool open mic coffee house, complete with poetry, jokes, dance, singing and musical instruments. Sixth grade English teacher Ms. Bloomfield coordinated again after successfully bringing this tradition to the middle school last year.
