All Together Now
At Friday’s third annual all-school Convocation, the entire student body joined together in the gym to celebrate the new school year and focus on our school values of unity, service, and knowledge. Student speakers include 8th grader Devyn Scott and Oliver Spiva. The school choir also performed. The Martha Cutts Gymnasium was built not only to have a state of the art athletics space, but to have a single place that can hold more than 850 people, which includes the entire student body and faculty, together for events like this that help build esprit de corps and a sense of purpose.
Parents in the Place
September 12th and 19th will be the two Back to School Nights, one for the upper school, and one for middle school parents. Parents will receive their children’s schedules and have the chance to walk through their day, visiting each class and learning about the major goals of each subject. This is a great chance to meet your children’s teachers and learn about the year ahead. If you can’t make it, feel free to reach out to teachers to get a copy of the class syllabus and asking questions about each class.
Dreams Of the Future
September 16th will be College Night for all juniors and parents. The event allows juniors to start to plan ahead for their academic careers and to learn about the college search process. During the senior year the two college counselors work with students to complete a Junior Portfolio, which will be a jumping off point for understanding their interests and goals. Students will have a chance to attend various college fairs over junior year, and tour different colleges. Over the summer before senior year, the college counselors run an Application Boot Camp, which helps students get ahead on the applications and plan their college essays. Students will continue to meet with their counselors throughout senior year to refine their lists, and will work with English teachers to perfect their essays.
Students at Work!
Many Washington Latin students had exciting internships and educational opportunitites this summer. Senior Sahara Trask and junior Amaya Tatum had internships at Children’s National Medical Center. Junior Zoe Edelman studied public policy issues at UVA, while senior Oliver Spiva took part in a medical program at GWU. To learn more about summer internship and study opportunities, Ms. Richardson is compiling an exhaustive list of student summer experiences.
World Travelers
Our students took the summer as a chance to study abroad and increase language proficiency or volunteer. Sophomores Luca Camponovo and Giulio Benson studied Arabic in Morocco through the CIEE program. Vivian Claire also visited Morocco through the NSLI-Y program. Junior Alicia Campbell studied Arabic as well, and junior Kamau Jackson went to Taiwan and continued his education in Chinese through NSLI-Y. Senior Gabby Micheli studied Arabic in Jordan. Seniors Felicity Ryan and Kim Montpelier studied Latin in Rome with the Paideia Institute’s Living Latin in Rome Program. Still many other students volunteered their time to serve others in countries in need. Junior Lydia Moore traveled to Ecuador for three weeks with Youth Ambassadors Program, a service learning trip, and junior Nazzy Fisher taught basketball in Guatamala. Other students developed their language proficiency by attending Concordia Language Villages, located in the U.S. Sophomore Dainius Antoine studied Arabic in Minnesota, while freshman Charlotte Krisetya and her brother Oliver studied Chinese. Sophomores Kayla Park and Camsey Noonan also took part in a Chinese immersion language village, along with juniors Catherine Sherman, LiQian Shoag, Jia Fleming. Senior Emma Olson studied French.
