Sixth graders at the Cooper Campus in Ms. Adeosun’s sixth grade history class are engaged in a multi-disciplinary unit called Heroes in History. Students have read stories about and researched the lives of Emmett Till and Anne Frank, the play Anne and Emmett by Janet Langhart Cohen and the young reader’s version of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. Students have taken part in discussions and book logs analyzing why it is valuable to remember, honor, and retell their stories and legacies. They have also written about the concepts of oppression, courage, and resilience, and what defines a hero. On December 12, the sixth graders will visit National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) to learn more about the historical events that gave context to both Frank and Till’s tragic deaths.
