Middle and Upper school students participated in the Washington Urban Debate League season Opener at Capital City Public Charter School. Of our 16 participants, 13 were new to debate. Students participated in novice, JV, and varsity divisions. Ninth grade pair Jia Fleming and Robbie Mirabello won all three rounds of their varsity debate, and ninth grader Hawaa Sturr won two of her four rounds in a solo debate. Seventh grader Jackson was one of the top five speakers in his JV division. Other participants included debate team pairs Amal (Juma) Buba,Kennedy Cawley and Aaron Smith, Eamon Price and Nassir Purnell-Snowden, Vanessa McCullers and Lena Webb, Sarah Schifferle and Marianna McDiarmid, Maxwell Burton, Brandon Souverain and D’Andre Person. The team is advised by Ms. Lee-Bey. The team’s next debate tournament will be November 4 at Greenbelt High School.
