Gene Gurus

The AP Biology class is currently working on a project that puts them in the role of a genetic counselor. They are tasked with researching a particular gene and preparing to diagnose a patient who has a mutation in that gene. They will be assessed on their ability to explain the diagnosis and answer the patient’s questions.

Justice and Mercy

Students in the conflict resolution class will go on a field trip next week to see the film Just Mercy.  The film is based on the memoir of Bryan Stevenson about his experiences working in Alabama appealing a death penalty case.  The class, taught by Ms. Grant, helps students learn to become mediators, working with peers on resolving tricky conflicts and building better communication skills inside our school.

United at American

This weekend the Upper School Model UN students will attend a conference at American University.  The following kids will be attending the conference and will miss Eta and Gamma on Friday. The club is advised by English and history teacher Ms. Hamd.

Thoughtful Thespians

In theater class, 6th graders  performed a Commedia delle ‘Arte show this week. They have previously studied Plautus and Roman Stock Characters: the clever servant, the bossy mother, the helpless adolescent and braggart soldier. Commedia delle ‘Arte is a 500 year-old tradition of improvisation among fun, recognizable characters like the sassy maid, the greedy old man, the quack doctor and braggart soldier. Students developed brief skits based on these behaviors with the help of their teacher Mr. Baldwin.

Choir at the Cathedral

On Wednesday upper school students in the Latin Voices and Honors Choir traveled to the National Cathedral to sing in the 15th Annual High School Choral Festival. They will be directed by Ms. VerCammen, the chair of the Arts Department. The event featured beautiful singing from several different high school choirs in a wide variety of genres.

Justice is not Just Us

Several juniors and seniors will participate as jurors in a mock trial with attorney general Karl Racine next week. Their day-long field trip will focus on the justice system. Eighth graders also take a field trip in February to visit the D.C. Superior Court as a culmination of their justice units in English and their lessons on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in history class. The theme of justice is one of the important issues that reoccurs in the curriculum in different grades through texts like To Kill a Mockingbird, Inherit the Wind, and 12 Angry Men and a nonfiction research unit that seniors engage in for English class on the justice system.
