Frequently Asked Questions
If and when Latin re-opens in person, can my child continue with all-virtual learning?
Yes. Students will have the option to choose to do virtual learning for the entire year.
Will there be an in-person option?
We are actively preparing to gradually add in-person elements for some students, starting with a small number of US classes, as soon as we can. In addition, we are working on finding ways to address academic interventions, mental health counseling, ELL support, etc.
What principles drive our plan for reopening?
Safety – This is first, with a focus on the common good – a teachable moment!
Quality content and teaching continue to be our norm.
Equity is a top priority; we will do all possible to meet needs, (NB: not necessarily equality or same for all).
Clarity is an essential tool. We will make expectations clear and engage and communicate often with students, families, and faculty.
Flexibility is required. Change is the constant! We must learn and adapt as we go.
How will remote instruction differ from the approach used in the spring?
Based faculty and parent feedback, we have an improved Distance Learning model with more synchronous learning and daily structure (especially for younger students).
What will my child's schedule look like in the Middle School?
In the Middle School, students will be in learning pods of 11-12 students for each class. Smaller pods are better for distance learning and will ease the eventual transition to on-campus learning.
Class schedules will be built around 75-minute learning blocks. This will include a 30-minute synchronous class, 45-minute asynchronous work time, and a 15-minute break.
What will my child's schedule look like in the Upper School?
In the Upper School, the virtual schedule will be built around 90-minute learning blocks. This will include a 30 to 45-minute synchronous class, 45 to 60-minute asynchronous work time, and a 15-minute break.
How will Latin protect health and safety of students and faculty on campus?
Limit how many people are on campus
- A maximum of 11 students per classroom six feet apart (by current regulations, may change)
- Drastically reduce access to building by visitors (parents, deliveries, etc.)
Track health and symptoms of those on-campus
- Initiate daily health screening using Latin-developed app and in-person evaluation (including temperature checks) before building entry
- Isolate symptomatic students until picked up
- Limit return of COVID-exposed for 14 days or with negative test (per Health Department regulation)
Masks will be required for all in the building.
- Teachers may also use face shields as well as masks.
- Students will need masks; breaks outside permissible with health reasons (e.g., asthma).
- Latin will have masks for anyone without their own.
Hygiene procedures also required.
- Hand-washing, hand-sanitizing, etc. incorporated into daily routines on campus.
- Signage will be posted (in hallways, bathrooms) reminding students of good hygiene practices.
- Water fountains for refilling water bottles only.
Limit direct contact and mingling.
- Students assigned to learning pods of 11 or fewer (MS) and limit contact if changing classes (US)
- Student pods remain in classrooms; teachers travel.
- Break, lunch, etc. with pod, not mingled
- Students and faculty maintain physical distance
Limit indirect contact.
- Building traffic patterns managed to limit contact
- Provide teachers with personal school supplies and PPE to carry with them throughout day
- Add plexiglass dividers in high-traffic public-facing areas
- Stagger arrival and dismissal times with modified protocols to increase distancing at drop-off and pick-up
Clean. Repeat.
- Assign bathrooms to specific pods and clean after use by pods; close every other stall/sink and rotate stalls daily
- Increase cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing protocols (daily, weekly, and monthly)
- Increase cleaning during the day of high-touch surfaces
- Deep clean twice weekly
Improve air flow and filtering. And also take it outside!
- Upgrade air filters to recommended MERV13 standard
- Increase draw of exterior air into building
- Open doors and windows to increase air circulation
- Create outdoor classrooms on field
What kind of technology will my child need?
For academic reasons and to ensure equity, we will be implementing a 1:1 Chromebook program, with Latin providing a device for each student.
Goal for fall: Distribute a school device to each student
Challenge: Delay in receiving enough Chromebooks for distribution in August
Interim plan: Close gaps with current inventory of Chromebooks according to a need-based priority list:
- Students in need (those qualifying for Free & Reduced Meals)
- Students with academic needs – IEP/504, English Language Learner status,
- By grade, starting in 5th
How do I get technology support?
For any technology related questions or concerns, please email techsupport@latinpcs.org.
Having trouble submitting work online in UC or Google? Use this reference guide tor support.
Which online platforms will be used?
All teachers will continue to use Unified Classroom, Zoom, and the Google suite. Different disciplines will use some additional technologies, and we are asking our faculty to limit the range.

What supplies will my child need?
The lists vary for each grade, so please refer to the supply lists for your child’s grade.
Welcome from the Parent-Faculty Association
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! The Parent-Faculty Association (PFA) exists to connect families, help cultivate a positive school culture, and raise funds in support of school objectives and operations. Every member of the school community is a member of the PFA and this year our goal is to double-down on our efforts to engage as many families as possible. We are stronger because of our diversity, inclusion, and generosity. You can check out the PFA page or READ MORE
