Junior MK Wilson and senior Chloe Cattaneo were awarded prizes at the annual Parkmont Poetry Festival. These Washington Latin students were two of the forty winners selected to have their poetry published through the contest. Wilson is the editor in chief of the school newspaper, Sumus Leones, and Cattaneo is the founder and editor of the school literary magazine, OpenMic. On Tuesday, members of DCRA (Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs) presented a program to students about careers in architecture and engineering. The program is part of Building Safety Month and taught students about building inspection, codes, as well as present material about scholarships in those fields. Anthony Diallo, parent of 7th grader Anthony Jr, lead the group.
Last week was the eighth annual Senior Honors Concert. This event honors graduating seniors who have taken part in the choir during their time at Latin. The concert included performances by the eighth grade choir, Honors Choir, Latin Voices, and the jazz band. This year there were 18 graduating seniors who participated in the program.
Middle schoolers will enjoy the spring dance this Friday, complete with a Hawaiian theme. The event is for seventh and eighth graders and features a photo both and a contest for the best dressed students in both grades. Seventh grade English teacher Mr. Green poses as his alter ego DJ Green Bean to spin music and keep students dancing all night long.
Last week students in Art 2 and Art 3 displayed the work they had completed during the year with Ms. Stephens. Students created work in various media, using three dimensional structures made from books, cardboard, newspapers, and cloth, paint, ink, and charcoal. Students presenters included Nathan Cobbs, Ciara Hovell, Chloe Cattaneo, Assata Reese, Anthony David, Helena Webb, Sebastian Oosterveld, Thalia Flores, Zoe McPherson, Joanna Ayala-Flores, Nick Geist, and Zekiah Wright.
