Equitable Access Preference

Washington DC schools welcome all DC students!

The Equitable Access Preference allows schools to preference or set aside seats for students who are considered at-risk, defined in DC as those who:

  • Are experiencing homelessness.
  • Are in the DC foster care system.
  • Qualify for government benefits such as SNAP or TANF
  • High school students that are one year older, or more, than the expected age for the grade in which the students are enrolled during that timeframe.

Eligibility for this preference means the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) has a record that the applicant has met at least one of four measures during the timeframe of April 1, 2022 and March 1, 2023. This preference can be implemented as either a traditional preference or through designated seats.

How do eligible families use this preference?

Families do not need to provide information in the lottery application. All that is needed is to check a box about sharing information.

On the last screen of the application, you see this statement:

“One or more of the schools you listed on your application may offer an Equitable Access preference for applicants that have met the preference criteria as measured by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education as measured between April 1, 2021 and March 1, 2022. Please click below to give consent to My School DC to coordinate with OSSE to determine if your child should receive this preference and transmit that information to the school.”

If you have any question about this, please contact the school to which you are applying or MySchoolDC. Learn more about lottery preferences at myschooldc.org
