Let the Games Begin

Advisory Leadership Olympics in the middle school starts next Monday, November 8th and runs the entirety of the second quarter. This will allow students to earn points and accolades for their advisories by helping a friend, academic risk taking, self-advocating, following routines, being on time, collaborating with others, affirming their friends and teachers, and persevering through challenges. Eighth grader Jahari Samuels starred in a comical video introducing the competition. 

 

La Vida De Los Muertos

Students and teachers celebrated el Dia de Los Muertos with the Spanish Language & Culture Club. The club is advised by Ms. Crespo and Ms. Silva. Afterschool festivities included-skull crafts, sweet bread, and discussions of cultural heritage to honor those special ones in our lives who have passed. 

Soccer Sensations

The varsity soccer teams are heading to a playoff game this weekend, as they approach the championship. The boys’ team nabbed a late night 3-0  win against Basis this week in the semi-final game.  Sophomore Kiran Mampara scored two goals and senior Abu Bockarie scored one. The two goalies, freshman Nyko Orekoya and sophomore Elias Baldwin, stood their grounds, blocking all shots. The team will complete in the DCCSAA finals on Friday against DCI. Their proud coaches Mr.  Bane and Mr. Edwards-Stuart are excited by the maturity and leadership the team showed this week. Meanwhile, the girls’ varsity team also triumphed this week with a win against E.L. Haynes 5-0. Seniors Lily Smeltzer, Ife Akinsanya, Juliette Warga, and juniors Madison Cerkey-McFaddin and Layla Axam scored. This team will proceed to the finals on Friday as well with a game at RFK. Coaches Richardson and McBride are excited to see the team triumph again!

Championships Ahead!

Besides Volleyball, several other teams are moving ahead to the championship. The Middle School boys flag football team will play in the championship game against KIPP Honor at Kenilworth Park at 4pm on Friday, and the Middle school and upper school cross country team will compete at the championship meet on Saturday. Meanwhile, boys and girls varsity soccer plays Thursday for the Petworth Cup.

Volleyball is Valiant!

MS Girls Volleyball beat DCI in the PCSAA semifinals 2-0 on Wednesday and then beat Two Rivers on Friday in the finals to capture the PCSAA Championship! The team is coached by Mr. Pieters and Ms. Kolb.
