Seventh graders at the Second Street Campus will be visiting various locations to complete community service.  The school will partner with a variety of activities including A Wider Circle, Capital Area Food Bank, Humane Rescue Alliance, Martha’s Table, Shepherd’s Table, and Central Union Mission DC. Some of this work will be on campus and some will be off campus. The event, which was introduced last year in the seventh grade, allows students to get a deeper understanding of the Washington, D.C. community and how to help people and animals in need. This fits right in with the school’s pervading interest in serving the common good.

Fifth grade students at 2nd Street and the entire Cooper campus are going to see The Nutcracker at Warner Theater on December 7th. Cooper students used the Literacy Block this week to learn about the ballet, including a brief ballet lesson from sixth grade math teacher Marina Jacobo. Fifth grader Nunu Perkins also provided her own dancing instructions, and teachers were excited to learn new dance moves.

Students in the sixth grade at 2nd Street will be visiting the Round House Theater on December 7 to see The Tempest, the Shakespearean play about survivors of a shipwreck who take refuge on an island where the sorcerer Prospero lives with his daughter Miranda and his two servants, along with a spirit named Ariel. This adaptation by Aaron Posner and Teller of the Penn & Teller magical duo, includes the music of Tom Waits, dance moves from Pilobolus, and of course iconic magic tricks.

Students in sixth grade at the Cooper Campus will be visiting the National Archives in January to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, for the class’s study of the Constitution. Students will also be visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Holocaust Museum to support their sixth grade English readings. 

Middle school girls basketball beat Kipp this week. High scorers included eighth graders Raine Montgomery-Vielmo, Jocelyn Gill, and seventh grader Nuala Lyster. The team is coached by Ms. Ousley.
