Basketball Scores!
The Middle School Boys’ Basketball team played a scrimmage on Tuesday against Imagine Hope Public Charter School and won 27 to 20. Seventh grader Ryan Tate was awarded the game MVP award for his passes and scoring. Friday the team has its first home game against Two Rivers PCS at our gym at 4pm. In the team’s first away game, it beat Friendship Blow Pierce thanks to eighth grader Logan Blair scoring an amazing 24 points!

Class Cinematographer
On Tuesday, Ms. Hamd’s class was visited by Washington Latin parent Mr. Hans Charles, a film professor at George Mason University who was the cinematographer for Ava DuVernay’s “13th.” He spoke to the World History II class on the making of “13th” and his family’s Haitian heritage. The movie explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation’s prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans. The 2016 documentary evalutes race, justice and mass incarceration and is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery, except as a punishment for a crime. He spoke about Haitian culture, food, language and history to enrich the class’s unit on the Haitian Revolution. He also spoke about cinematography, specifically documentary film making and the use of light to help tell the story.

Grappling on Our Grounds
Washington Latin hosted our first at home wrestling meet against St. Anselm’s Abbey on Tuesday. This sport, which is well-rooted in the classical curriculum is coached by science teacher Mr. Torrence. In December, the wrestling team faced off against Model Secondary School for the Deaf and Northwest HS. Nearly every member of the wrestling team had an opportunity to wrestle and we won both meets due to the amount of forfeits by both of the other teams. Freshmen Jabulani Clay and Satiya Ewing-Boyd both won their matches after amazing performances.

The Argument of Art
Students in Ms. Collins’ AP Language and Composition class visited the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to evaluate how art uses elements of composition to create a persuasive or emotional message. Students could look at any exhibit they wanted and chose one piece of artwork to report on, telling the class what they thought the “argument” of the piece was and supporting their claims with evidence from the art and their understanding of messaging.
