The girls varsity soccer team won its first league game against Kipp 7-0. The team is coached by upper school math teacher Mr. Richardson. The team captains are seniors Zoe Crute, Sofia Posada, and Eva Antoine. Go Lions!

Many Faces and Phases

Tuesday Ms. Barlev’s 8th grade science class worked on understanding the moon’s phases. The class looked at model moons on toothpicks and rotated them around their body so they could see how different phases of the moon are created.

iRobot

30 students in the upper school joined the Underwater Robotics club. The group, which meets weekly, is split into 3 teams, with 1 varsity league producing a complex robot, and 2 junior varsity leagues creating simpler robots. Students will work through the fall and winter to design the robots’ frames, make control boxes, and create new tasks and programs so that the robots can move.  The club will meet from 3:30-5:00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and parents and faculty are welcome to join.

Ecosystem in a Bottle

Next week Mr. Torrence’s environmental science students will be creating ecosystems in a bottles called Terrariums.  They will fill them with water and aquatic plants or other small hearty plants and various animal garden critters. These model ecosystems will help them understand how different elements of the underwater structures interact.

Making a Round World Flat

This week in Ms. Mujal’s 5th grade  geography classes, students are working to better understand maps. They will be drawing the world map onto oranges. Students have memorized the shape and location of the continents. They then will peel the orange and try to flatten the peal to look at map distortions.
