New Clubs in the Mix
Students on both campuses have started new clubs this year. New Clubs at 2nd Street include the Mythology Club, The Wednesday Adams fanclub, Fashion Design Club, and Cartoon Club. Students at Cooper Campus also started several student-lead clubs including an LGBTQ rights club, a World Building Club, a Movie Making Club, and a Chess Club. Clubs meet at lunch or during tutorial and are lead by industrious students, with help from faculty advisors.
College Sports
Upper school student-athletes attended the Women’s Basketball game at American University on Wednesday. The group included members of the cheerleading squad lead by Ms. Griffiths, the varsity girls’ basketball team, lead by Ms. Woods, and the Varsity track team, lead by Mr. Callum and Ms. Dreux.
Delicious English Readings
In the first few weeks of January Ms. Foley’s ninth grade English class at Second Street, completed a short “Foods of the World” unit in which students read literature from different cultures of the world where they were from and ate food from there also. Families sent in food, and Ms. Foley brought Yugoslavian crescents from her great-grandma’s recipe. The class read “Bridge on the Zepa,” to go with the food. Another day, students ate homemade Irish soda bread and read “Limbo” and “Digging” by Seamus Heaney. One day they ate Italian pastry and read “In a Station of the Metro” by Ezra Pound and “The Flowers Come As Gifts” by Amelia Rosselli, and lastly students learned about the origins of hush puppies in America through a nonfiction text.
Ballers in Action
The varsity boys and girls basketball teams were busy this week, taking on the Basis Red Giants on Thursday. In between the game, coaches recognized the senior athletes on the basketball, cheerleading, and track and field teams with a celebration in the annual Winter Senior Night. This is the first Winter Senior Night since 2019, because sadly Covid precautions prevented the last few events from taking place. This week the boys’ team also played Washington Leadership Academy on Wednesday and Capital City on Friday.
Track Races Ahead
The Varsity track team visited Liberty University for an invitational meet. The girls 4 X 400 relay, featuring seniors Isabel Charles, Claire Emanuel, junior Dami Akinsanya, and sophomore Lily Williams, ran their season best and qualified for States! Senior Owen Doherty scored a personal best in his 500 meter race, winning his heat and ranking No. 7 in the state. Doherty also has the 3rd fastest time in the state for the 800 meter race! Junior Tyler Davis won his heat as well in the 55 meter dash, scoring his own personal best. The team will travel to Georgetown Prep this weekend for the Private and Independent School Invitational.
