Thankful for Theatre

For the first time this year, the upper school will offer a class called “Performance Studies in Theater.” This one-credit semester-long course will include Aristotle’s Poetics as a jumping-off point, and will explore theater from page to stage as a live performing art. The class will focus on contemporary American Theater and explore topics including dramatic structure, the relationship between theater and society, theatrical representation, and the crafts of acting and playwriting. Students will rehearse and perform a variety of scenes, engage with live performances and video archives of past performances, and write their own short works for the stage.

Nothing But Net!

The Upper School Basketball team won a game against Cesar Chavez Public Charter School this week with a score of team 70-60. The team is now 1-1 in the PCSAA conference. The team is coached by director of athletics Mr. Eleby-El.  Meanwhile the middle school basketball team has a stunning 9-0 record right now, after a 46-26 win this week. That team is coached by  middle school dean Mr. Coleman.

Renaissance Men and Women

The sixth grade celebrated a Renaissance Faire this week, complete with food, costumes, and performances. The event was based on history lessons from Civics class, taught by Mr. Staten, and included elements of several other classes built in. The Washington Latin history, Latin, and modern language courses help students learn and experience history through reenactments, language development, and of course food and culture study.

The Bard Lives!

Students in Ms. Seid’s two AP Lit classes have designed two scenes from Hamlet to participate in the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s TextAlive program. The program reduces the text to manageable scenes and assigns the groups to perform each scene. The teaching artist Dan Crane worked with students in Ms. Seid’s class, helping them get into character, and design and direct the sets, lighting, and sound.

Bee Cool

The Middle School Spelling Bee will occur in January, as part of the National Scripps Bee. Each grade will select two winners, who will proceed to the schoolwide bee. The winners will move on to the cluster bee against other charter schools, and then the citywide bee. The annual event is organized by middle school English department chair and 7th grade English teacher, Ms. Peale.
