What is the Cooper Campus?

Our Cooper Campus is new; we opened in the fall of 2022. Many families know about the existing campus on 2nd Street, but Cooper is not as well known to DC families. We want to change that! It will have the same model – small classes, great teachers, and grades 5-12. The Cooper Campus will have grades 5-9 in 2025-26. We are adding a grade each year to eventually serve grades 5-12.

In the fall of 2025, we will move all Cooper grades to a beautiful new building at North Capitol and Harewood Road NE. This will be our permanent home for Cooper’s Middle and Upper School (grades 5-12).

What grades does Latin offer?

Washington Latin has a middle school through graduation model – grades 5-12. We start in 5th grade, which gives our students an extra year to make the transition to middle school. We spend time working on their organizational skills, so they are able to handle increased work and more difficult classes later. We also spend time building our community, so they are able to feel at home in our school and able to learn and thrive!

We also get to know our students, starting at 10 or 11 years all the way to their graduation from high school – that is an important part of our model. It also means we have families that join our community and stay with us from their oldest child’s 5th grade year through their youngest’s graduation from high school. Community is really important – having students and families over years helps us build our close-knit community. AND your child can stay with us through high school – without re-entering the lottery!

Why 5th? Why not wait until 6th grade?

But why not wait until 6th grade? Well, that is easy – we rarely have ANY spots in 6th grade. This is actually good news, because it shows that our students re-enroll each year (sometimes ALL students re-enroll for the next grade!) We do not open any seats for 6th grade, only offering spots off the waitlist if we have an opening because a student has moved.

If you have a child on the waitlist for any other grade at Latin, applying your rising 5th grader to Latin is the BEST way to secure a spot for that older child! When we offer seats to students in grades 6-9 (our last year for NEW students to either campus is 9th grade), it is ALWAYS with a preference, including MATCHED SIBLING PREFERENCE!

So we really hope you will try us out for 5th grade!
