Many Faces and Phases

Tuesday Ms. Barlev’s 8th grade science class worked on understanding the moon’s phases. The class looked at model moons on toothpicks and rotated them around their body so they could see how different phases of the moon are created.

iRobot

30 students in the upper school joined the Underwater Robotics club. The group, which meets weekly, is split into 3 teams, with 1 varsity league producing a complex robot, and 2 junior varsity leagues creating simpler robots. Students will work through the fall and winter to design the robots’ frames, make control boxes, and create new tasks and programs so that the robots can move.  The club will meet from 3:30-5:00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and parents and faculty are welcome to join.

Ecosystem in a Bottle

Next week Mr. Torrence’s environmental science students will be creating ecosystems in a bottles called Terrariums.  They will fill them with water and aquatic plants or other small hearty plants and various animal garden critters. These model ecosystems will help them understand how different elements of the underwater structures interact.

Making a Round World Flat

This week in Ms. Mujal’s 5th grade  geography classes, students are working to better understand maps. They will be drawing the world map onto oranges. Students have memorized the shape and location of the continents. They then will peel the orange and try to flatten the peal to look at map distortions.

All Together Now

At Friday’s third annual all-school Convocation, the entire student body joined together in the gym to celebrate the new school year and focus on our school values of unity, service, and knowledge. Student speakers include 8th grader Devyn Scott and Oliver Spiva. The school choir also performed. The Martha Cutts Gymnasium was built not only to have a state of the art athletics space, but to have a single place that can hold more than 850 people, which includes the entire student body and faculty, together for events like this that help build esprit de corps and a sense of purpose.

Parents in the Place

September 12th and 19th will be the two Back to School Nights, one for the upper school, and one for middle school parents. Parents will receive their children’s schedules and have the chance to walk through their day, visiting each class and learning about the major goals of each subject. This is a great chance to meet your children’s teachers and learn about the year ahead. If you can’t make it, feel free to reach out to teachers to get a copy of the class syllabus and asking questions about each class.
