Varsity Sports Heats Up!

On Tuesday, varsity boys beat IDEA PCS in a tight game, winning 61-58 in overtime. Meanwhile the girls beat Basis 46-10, in a lopsided win. Their team spirit, collegiality, and positive attitudes through these competitive games. Thursday, the girls play DCI and the boys play SEED in the semi-final round of the PCSAA playoffs. The wrestling team goes tot he state tournament on Saturday at Gonzaga, and the indoor track goes to George Mason for the DC State Championships.

Ninth Grade Poets Persevere

On Wednesday’s Poetry Out Loud competition ninth graders took the top three spots. First place winner was Oscar Murray, second place winner was Brooke Roberson, and the third place finisher was Ruby-Rae McCants. Students spent several weeks evaluating, analyzing, and memorizing famous poems in their English classes for the competition, vying with sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the competition. Congratulations to the young poetry aficionados and the ninth grade English teacher, Ms. Alston on their poetry prowess! Oscar will proceed to the next level of the city-wide competition.

Fifth and sixth grade teachers announced the winners to the science fair this week. In fifth grade Elena Kwon, Avery Durant, and Liv Darling won first with a group project about how the material and size affect the aerodynamics of a plane? Khalil McKinney won second, the team of Caroline Beares and Rachel Regardie won third, the team of Kennedy Porter and Leo Edwards won 4th, and William Dunne and Aiden McCleskey won fifth. In the sixth grade, Francisco Blanco won first, Luther McClinton came in second place, Zen Duvall-Smith and seventh grader Annie Alcorn tied for third. Eden Claire won fourth place, Moses Stone-Amgott won fifth place. Along with several honorable mentions, these students will proceed to the Montgomery County Virtual Science Fair in the spring!

The middle school girls basketball team won the 2021 PCSAA Championship against DCI, besting their competitors 41-31. Coach Mozie led the team to victory in an exciting Saturday game. Thursday the girls and boys basketball team competed in their own games.

Spellers Carry On

Thursday Washington Latin’s star spellers competed in the Cluster Bee against neighboring schools. Eighth graders Reva Kelly and Noa Smudde competed alongside 7th grader Imanuel Brandon. Reva nabbed  a spot in the top 8 spellers, moving on to the citywide bee. Imanuel just missed the spot by coming in ninth overall.

Winter Warriors

While the temperature hit peak running weather in the sunny 60’s this week, the winter track team has shown itself to be weather-proof. Back in January the team, coached by Mr. Callum, survived chilly temps to nab a 3rd place overall finish in the 4X800 relay in their first meet of the season.
