This will air on channel 99 if you have Comcast, 18 on RCN, and 12 on Verizon Fios. Or you can watch the DKN livestream at  http://video.oct.dc.gov/DKN/jw.html. Watch Reva vie with other students in a tight race with a dramatic finish.

Science Sensations

Sixth graders in Ms. Dobler’s science class are now Watershed Finalists in the region’s contest researching and protecting the waterways. This means our students were among the top 10 projects in the entire Chesapeake Bay region! This is the first Latin group to make it to the top 10 finalists since 2018. The students are Eden Claire, Campbell Hall, Mia Jancachagua Espinoza, Emma Fitzpatrick, Mila Applebaum, and Lydia Tiersky. Since the finals are virtual this year, there are two next steps. The first step is the students will be presenting live in Zoom to the 4-5 judges in late April and attending the Virtual Summit in May.

History Comes Alive

In Ms. Hamd’s World History II class students are working on their unit culminating projects on the Black Panther Party. Students are creating a poster of the 10-Point Program that the Black Panthers utilized, or a poster of a key figure or event, or a poster of the timeline of the party.  They will also choose between a powerpoint presentation, an essay, an interview, a rap, a press conference or a panel of key figures.

Science Soiree

Renaissance man, 7th grade Latin teacher and science PhD. Dr. Bonner, will host a gathering for faculty soiree in April to discuss Copernicus’s heliocentric hypothesis and the role of ancient ideas in helping build new revolutionary ideas. Faculty soirees allow teachers a chance to consider abstract and interdisciplinary ideas and engage in thoughtful dialogue. The learning never stops for teachers at Washington Latin.

Civics Citizen

Sixth grade Civics teacher Mr. Staten will be an educational consultant for Davis Garrigus’s new PBS documentary The American Constitution. Mr. Staten moderated an event recently, interviewing David O. Stewart, with participation from current sixth graders. The well-loved civics teacher can often be seen putting his dramatic skills to use, whether dressed in a three-piece suit, colonial American gear, or Egyptian garb.

Queen of the Bee

Eighth grader Reva Kelly proved once again that she is the “Spelling Queen,” as her advisory occasionally jokes, singing along to the ABBA song. This past week she participated in the citywide spelling bee, earning a stunning second place, after winning the school and cluster bee. Last year, she was in a three-way tie for 2nd place at the cluster bee.
