On Wednesday the fifth grade had its annual flash mob in the MPR. The sudden unexpected dance routine was choreographed by theater teacher Mr. Baldwin. Previous performances included Pharrell’s “Happy” in 2019, “Don’t you Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” performed last spring on Zoom during an assembly. In 2020, a flash mob was planned to the song “The Battle of Yorktown” from Hamilton.but were thwarted by the sudden switch to online learning.
Mr. Day’s Intro to World Religions headed down to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon, to meet with Father Brendan there and take a gander at sacred Christian architecture and compare and contrast what we see there with what they could expect to see in a Protestant church, and draw connections between differences in architecture and decor and differences in theology. The religion class, taught by Mr. Day, allows students to ask questions, do research, and evaluate the similarities and differences in various world religions. Mr. Day earned a graduate degree in comparative religion at the University of Chicago.
At the end of ispirit week, eighth graders hiked through Rock Creek Park for Earth Day, completing a scavenger hunt for their science ecology unit. Highlights included evaluating the various flora and fauna and considering the interaction between human, animal, and plant life. Students kept their chaperones laughing by singing as they hiked, skipping stones in the creek, and enjoying some fun in the sun.
Latin’s Middle School and Varsity baseball season is off to a strong start. The Middle School team, coached by Mr. Staten and Ms. Ousley, first won a lopsided game against KIPP 21 to 0. They later eked out a nailbiter victory against 8-7 Basis, thanks to a game-tying home run by eighth grade captain Tate Meier and a game-winning stolen base by seventh grader Harper Waters. This week the team bested Meridian PCS in another uneven game. The Varsity team, coached by Mr. Baum, Mr. Coleman and Mr. Cooper soared into a resounding victory against SEED in the first game. Varsity softball is coached by Mr. Staten and Ms. Ousley are 7-1, after losing a tight game to National Cathedral School this week.
The last Wellness Day of the year took place last week. Students engaged in various activities to recharge their spirit and serve the community. Upper schoolers took part in neighborhood cleanups, cleanup at Rock Creek Park, making inspiring posters to hang through the school building, and other community service. Middle schoolers took hikes, jogs, played soccer, basketball, watched movies, and took part in reading and art activities to rest and recharge for the remainder of fourth quarter. The quarterly Wellness Days allow students a chance to reflect and relax in a social environment with their teachers.
Last week, Latin middle school frisbee beat Deal middle school 15-1. The team is coached by Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Starnes. The team followed up with a 15-0 win against DCI later in the week! Upper school frisbee, coached by Mr. Hultgren and Mr. Yonker, beat Field on Wednesday 15-5 and will take part in a tournament at Sidwell on Saturday.
