Wednesday night will be the Winter Dinner Concert, a fundraiser for the various choirs and Jazz Band. As of now, 32 tickets are still available! Please join us Wednesday night 6:00 – 8:00pm! Food will be catered by Broad Branch Market. Students will work as dinner servers and of course as entertainment, performing music from the fall semester. This is the sixth annual concert and it will feature new soloists and also at the end of the event, upperclassmen are given the opportunity to publicly thank an adult who has really helped them along.
On Thursday this week, our school honored two Fall student athletes in between the girls and boys varsity basketball games. For the first time, Washington Latin PCS has two athletes that made the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) ALL STATE TEAM in Cross Country. The student athletes sophomore Luke Tewalt and freshman Zoe Edelman, had success throughout the season, but particularly at the DCSAA state championships, where Edelman placed eighth and Tewalt came in second.
Teachers gathered in the library Wednesday to celebrate our fearless leader Diana Smith with a birthday party. Mr. Clausen and Mr. Yonker wrote a comedic performance about a day in the life of Ms. Smith, and teachers made a purple mad hatter’s crown and framed a photo of her favorite athlete Roger Federer. Even former Head of School Ms. Cutts was there, dressed in purple and ready to raise a cup of hot chocolate to salute Ms. Smith.
Friday students in the upper school will attend a Model UN conference at American University. Members of the club attending include senior Javi Galarce, junior Goodness Ukaegbu, and sophomores Zander Shoag,
Shelby Ferncrombie, Maddy Katz, Harry Hirsch, and Makiya Tucker.
Seventh grader Adelaide Pfeuffer came in first place in the schoolwide spelling bee on Monday. She was followed by fifth grader Oliver Paterson, seventh grader Paulina Inglima, and sixth grader Ben Yarkin. Adelaide won with the challenging word subterranean, (after Oliver was eliminated on the word parenthetical). Next up for these fine spellers is the Cluster Bee on February 8th, when they will compete against other charter schools.
Washington Latin juniors Audrey Ashdown and Cecilia Timberg and sophomore Joseph Claire arrived at the Conserve School in Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin this weekend for their spring semester. They will study environmental education in nearby forests and lakes, learning about wildlife, survival skills, and environmental stewardship. Junior Theo Cowart recently returned from a fall semester at Conserve, and seniors Lucie Warga and Sean Lovett attended the school last year.
