The Upper School wrestling team had its first meet against Jackson Reed, Thomas Jefferson, and Roosevelt HS before winter break. The team was lead by their advisor, science teacher Mr. Torrence, and senior wrestlers Zemen Sium and Jackson Lewis. Freshman Preston Olander brought seven years of wrestling experience to the match. The team won 3-2, beating Wilson/Jackson Reed twice this year, and Potomac School once.
Students were invited to wear their silliest holiday sweaters and dressdown attire for the last day before break to send off the holiday in style. Mr. Kelly has been showcasing his own holiday sweater collection, including one sweater featuring the Power Rangers!
Students took part in their annual reading of the Dickens holiday classic “A Christmas Carol,” in the library before break. Meanwhile, Second Street eighth grader Ravi Mampara was featured in the Ford’s Theatre performances of “A Christmas Carol.”
Upper school students started their own writing center. The new club, the brainchild of junior Natalie Timberg, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays during tutorial on the Arabic side of the library. The club is advised by upper school English teacher Ms. Feist.
Students in Mr. Torrence’s AP environmental science and Mr. Finkelman’s environmental science class visited the Baltimore Aquarium on Tuesday to observe and explore animals from all over the world. The Aquarium has a wide variety of aquatic habitats, including the northern Australian river gorge, the tropical rainforest and the Indo-Pacific reef.
Students in the upper and middle school of Second Street participated in the performance of Clue, a comedic play directed by theater teacher Mr. Birkenhead. The play will be performed on the 8th through the 11th. The play was double-cast, with two specific sets of actors. The play, based on the board game, includes the iconic characters, Professor Plum, Ms. Scarlet, Ms. Peacock, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, and Col. Mustard. In the third quarter, students will take part in a musical called Curtains, directed by Mr. Baldwin.
