Jumpstart to Success

This year Washington Latin’s college counselors are teaching a course called Junior JumpStart once a week during the fourth quarter to ease the juniors into the college application process. Students will work on brainstorming essay topics, understanding the parts of an application and their importance, researching colleges, starting to fill in their Common Application, continuing to refine the drafts of their résumés they’ve created, and plan for their future.

PCSAA Power

This was a busy week for WLPCS sports, as teams continued into the championship and playoff rounds of competition. On Tuesday the tennis team was successful in the PCSAA tournament as the team’s singles student athletes Daud Gantt-Bey and Alicia Campbell both won their matches.  On Wednesday, Gantt-Bey beat his competitor from Wilson High School 8-1, and moved on to the Quarter Finals. On Monday, the Track & Field team dominated several of the league championship in the PCSAA tevents. Several athletes took home first place including the boys’ 4X800 meter relay, freshman Zoe Edelman in the girls’ 1600 race, sophomore Luke Tewalt in the boys’ 1600 meter race, senior Micaiah Jones in the girls’ 800 meter race, and sophomore Oliver Spiva in the boys’ 800 meter race.

At this week’s DC Prep Relays, eighth grader Casey Montrey earned a first place finish in the Boys 800 Meters, and Jonah Spiva nabbed a second place finish. Spiva also earned a first place win in the Boys 1600m race, and Montrey came in second.  Meanwhile, at last week’s Carlos Parsons Relays, the middle school track team scored several second place finishes, including a silver medal in the long-jump for Caly Cage. Also finishing second were several girls’ relay teams, including the 4 X 100 team of Amirah Taliaferro-Brunn, Caly Cage, Sydney Weaver, and Lily Smeltzer, as well as the 4X800 team of eighth graders Nia Matthews-Cox, Caroline Watterson, and seventh graders Madison Cerkey-Mcfaddin and Claire Emanuel. Also finishing second was the 4X400 team of Asha Brooks, Genet Tewalt, Juliette Warga, and Sophia Zinn. The team is coached by Ms. McDaniel and Mr. Green, with help from Mr. O’Brien.

The Upper School Girls’ Softball team nabbed a spot this week in the PCSAA Finals, which will take place on Monday. Latin’s Lady Lions scored  a 24-5 victory over Paul Public Charter School.  The team will play the winner of KIPP DC and Capital City in the finals at Nationals Academy Park. History teacher Mr. Staten coaches the team with science teacher Ms. Eggleston.

This past weekend, juniors Aubrey Nowland and Nick Geist ran their first half marathon in Pittsburgh alongside their cross country coach Ms. Nevola.  Both students are part of the varsity squad for fall cross country.

At Wednesday’s 7th Annual Senior Honors Concert, the different choirs performed music including Renaissance songs, swing, and the 2016 FIFA World Cup Song. The annual event celebrates graduating seniors who have devoted themselves to music during their time at Washington Latin. This year’s senior choir members include Aliyah Lee, Marcus Logan, Anayah Reid, Isaiah Smith, Daryl Dixon, Harris Marks, Mitchell Shapiro,  Anna Krebs, Baily Pinkney, Alim Wilkins, Nate Crystal, and Noah Logan.
