Portrait of Our Students as Young Artists

Upper school students in Ms. Stephens’ art class made self-portraits from photographs, using various media and colors to depict aspects of their identity. Students enlarged photos using the grid method to get an accurate representation of their faces, and then chose three different medium to use for shading to convey a mood. The portraits are hanging in the central hallway, and along the wall of the entryway. Come take a look inside the minds of our young artists!

Math in the Morning

Several teachers will meet before school this Friday to discuss the book Becoming the Math Teacher You Wish You Had: Ideas and Strategies for Vibrant Classrooms. Throughout the year, teachers have joined several educational reading groups to learn more about reaching students, understanding the adolescent brain, and making content exciting.

Laoshi Returns!

Chinese teacher and World Languages department chair Ms. Stouder returned from maternity leave after the vacation. Over the summer she gave birth to her son Isaac. She was visited on her first week back by several Washington Latin graduates during the week who reminisced about how they use Chinese in college and in their work, inspired by their time in her classroom and the trip to China she chaperones every two or three years.

Holiday Hijinks!

Before the holiday vacation, both the middle and upper school had assemblies to celebrate teachers, students, and administrators who had earned kudos from their peers for achievement. The monthly assemblies allow students a chance to gather, work on public speaking and listening skills and celebrate one another’s achievements. Ms. Chall also honored student participants in a national math exam, and teachers and students read aloud merits they had written to honor one another. Ms. Nevola’s Honors Choir opened the assembly with a rousing performance of holiday carols. At the upper school performance several teachers joined in the fun with some pre-vacation talent performances and songs. It was a merry start to the vacation!

Students from the middle and upper school as well as many teachers gathered in the library before break for the annual reading aloud of excerpts from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. 2016 graduate Mica Carroll joined in the fun, alongside 2018 graduates Sophie Healy and Annelise Claire.

Washington Latin 2014 graduate Vanessa Rodriguez has now started as Program Assistant at the International Center for Journalists. She will be working in the organization’s Latin American programs. Rodriguez recently graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2018. In Seville, Spain where she spent a semester studying journalism and communication. During her time abroad, she wrote the leading cover story for the student led Spanish magazine Mas + Menos. Inspired by this work, she joined a summer travel project called Podcasts for Peace to empower youth through storytelling in Managua, Nicaragua. Prior to joining the ICFJ team in 2018, Rodriguez interned as a production assistant at the local PBS station in Western New England (WGBY) under their first bilingual show Presencia.
