Bolstered by school choice advocates at the local, state, and federal level, charter schools have proliferated in the past 20 years. They stand to expand further under Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. The National Charter School Association estimates that 3.2 million students attended around 7,000 charter campuses in 2017–18. The appeal of charters, for many, is the flexibility to waive certain requirements of traditional schools and embrace varied models, curricula, and educational philosophies, ranging from the rigorous “no excuses” models, with strict dress codes and discipline policies, to Montessori and language immersion. Good Morning, Washington visits Latin

Reporter Kidd O’Shea dropped by to appreciate our teachers on Thursday of Teacher Appreciation Week. He brought coffee and breakfast, we shared why we teach. A few early-rising students also shared what they love about teachers at Latin. Diana Smith also introduced our Jazz Band and the juniors’ field trip with veterans to the 9/11 memorial in Shanksville, PA with The 9:57 Project. Watch online!

ABC 7 Features Washington Latin in story on kids and cell phones

Is there an appropriate age for kids to get their first cell phone?

“If I let them be on these devices all the time, they would be,” said Diana Smith, Principal at the Washington Latin Public Charter School, of when students can use their cell phones during the school day.

Smith says now, most of the fifth graders, the youngest grade offered in the charter school, have cell phones.

“I’ve got a lot of ten-year-olds wandering around this building with $250 phones,” she said.

Diverse public charter schools are in demand and growing.

The Albert Shanker Institute recently released a report that analyzed the negative effects of private schools on integrated public education in Washington, D.C. While only 15 percent of students in the nation’s capital attend private schools, 57 percent of white students do.
