Voices of History

Voices of History

Eighth graders have completed Voice Threads in Ms. Coppola-Klein and Mr. Anderson’s history classes based on their studies of Colonial Life. The technology is a cloud-based application that allows users to upload, share and discuss documents, presentations, images, audio files and videos. This technology also allows students to teach their peers and use historical research in an interactive setting.  Students will build on their understanding of Colonial Life in next week’s trip to Colonial Williamsburg.

Ms. Stephens’ middle school art classes have opened its first exhibit containing 12 digital photographs taken by my 8th grade students. The exhibit uses Narrative Art, based on the influence of 5 narrative art painters and 2 narrative photographers. The assignment fit into various genres: mystery, religion, or history.  Students also received a photograph from a peer in another class and were tasked at creating a story to go along with the image.
Soccer Scores!

Soccer Scores!

Upper school girls’ soccer nabbed a 4-0 victory this week over KIPP. The team, coached by math teacher Mr. Richardson, also won the Petworth cup earlier this fall. Junior Meg Grieve was in the goal and made sure not a single ball went beyond her reach.  Senior Emerson Moore scored 2 goals, and sophomores Eva Antoine and Kim Montgomery each scored one.  Noted Richardson, “The team demonstrated its growing possession and passing game and its ability to adapt to circumstances.  KIPP has a very fast team but we managed to hold the ball for the majority of the game.”

College on the Horizon

College on the Horizon

Ms. Latham and Ms. Richardson hosted an annual college night event for juniors and their parents to learn about preparing for the application process. Our college counselors provide students with in-depth insights into choosing and applying to colleges by opening regular college visit sessions to all upper school students, and working with juniors to create a portfolio of their work and future plans for study. They also host an Application Boot Camp over the summer and in the fall for seniors, so students can get insight into writing college essays, applying for financial aid, and creating a dynamic student profile that will attract colleges.  The school also hosts a fall college fair and visits other college fairs, along with taking a multi-college tour in spring break for sophomores and juniors. These events help increase student access to finding the right college and mastering the admissions process.

The Fifth H is Humor

The Fifth H is Humor

Seniors spent a weekend in the woods at the 4H Camp in Maryland. Highlights included canoeing, advisory competitions, playing manhunt, and eating pie. Mr. Porcelli’s advisory triumphed in the advisory competitions. The annual event helps seniors start their year on a positive note, get to know their classmates and teachers on a deeper level and build a greater sense of spirit and community through humor, play, and competition.
