Washington Latin hosted our first at home wrestling meet against St. Anselm’s Abbey on Tuesday. This sport, which is well-rooted in the classical curriculum is coached by science teacher Mr. Torrence. In December, the wrestling team faced off against Model Secondary School for the Deaf and Northwest HS. Nearly every member of the wrestling team had an opportunity to wrestle and we won both meets due to the amount of forfeits by both of the other teams. Freshmen Jabulani Clay and Satiya Ewing-Boyd both won their matches after amazing performances.
Because once you are a Latin Lion, you are always a member of our team, graduates of WLPCS will return for the Student Athlete Alumni Night onThursday. The Girls and Boys Varsity teams will host Somerset. The event was originally scheduled last week but was postponed due to snow.
Students in Ms. Collins’ AP Language and Composition class visited the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to evaluate how art uses elements of composition to create a persuasive or emotional message. Students could look at any exhibit they wanted and chose one piece of artwork to report on, telling the class what they thought the “argument” of the piece was and supporting their claims with evidence from the art and their understanding of messaging.
In an effort to keep our faculty healthy and energized through the winter months, Mr. Kelly spear-headed a fitness challenge between November and early December. Out of the faculty 29 teachers logged their daily hours of physical activity, totally 389 workouts totaling more than 365 hours. The three teachers who logged the most hours during this time were Mr. Berment with 3,450 minutes, Ms. Raskin with 2,055, and Ms. Breitman at 1,260 minutes. The teachers who logged the greatest number of workouts included Mr. Berment with 39 workouts, Ms. Raskin with 34 workouts, and Ms. Senty with 26 workouts. New Years Day started the second Washington Latin FitnessChallenge and teachers are scrambling to find ways to work out despite the bitter cold outside. We will keep you posted on the results!
The Middle School Community Council wanted to spread some holiday cheer so the students visited all advisories with a small candy cane and a little inspirational humorous message for each student. Students also participated in classroom festivities like holiday themed movies, songs, and food.
