Getting Fit!

Teachers at the middle and upper school will take part in their second annual fitness challenge. Volunteers will log their hours of physical exercise and compete for the most time spent working out and the most frequent workouts. We will post the winners in the winter! So tie your running shoes and let the games begin!

Librarian Ms. Hamm and science teacher Ms. Shapiro hosted the new Maker Space open house on Wednesday after school. The Maker Space, which opened last year, is a lab for creating physical objects using electronic kits, Legos, a 3D Printer, and Spheros Arduino. The Maker Space can be used to produce all kinds of ideas and inventions in a 3D format. Middle school teacher Ms. Dobler has also been instrumental in helping to build the space for creative student work.

An Education in Conservation

Seniors Audrey Ashdown and Cecilia Timberg and Junior Joseph Claire have returned from a semester at the Conserve School in Wisconsin, and junior Zoe Wolfel has left for a semester at the program. The environmental education program offers a semester in the outdoors learning about the ecosystem, environmental science, and survival skills.  Other Washington Latin students who have participated in the Conserve School program include 2017 graduates Zhen Hua Pavetti, Theo Shoag, Sam Mader, and Alex Crute, and 2018 graduates Sean Lovett and Lucie Warga. Senior Theo Cowart also took part in the program last fall.

In June, Physics and AP Environmental Science teacher Mr. Torrence earned a travel grant to visit Mount Rushmore this summer, and took a tour that focused on sustainability efforts and educational programming. He also worked repairing trails at the monument.

Assistant Principal on the Go

The always very busy Ms. Roberts, our Assistant Principal for Student Life and Co-Director of Student Support Services, took some time out of her well-stocked school year schedule for some serious globetrotting this summer. After visiting several schools to learn about the Finnish educational system, she also toured Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Iceland. She was particularly taken by Italian art and architecture.
