Ms. Richardson’s Mi Herencia Multilingual Spanish Heritage class had a Latino Coffee House on Tuesday. The class showcased research projects highlighting the Latino population in four neighborhoods in DC. Presentations were in English for the first 45 minutes and Spanish for the second 45. Students also enjoyed various foods including tamales, sweet bread, coffee, tea, jugo de durazno (peach juice), and mango bonbons.

The annual school musical premiered this week, with sold out performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The production of “Legally Blonde” features middle and upper schoolers in a comedic performance of a 2007 musical written by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and book by Heather Hach based on the novel and film Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown. The arts department worked hard on this production with numerous late night practices and months of planning.

Students in the upper school assembled Wednesday to honor Black History Month. The Jazz Band played an interlude and later performed the song “Minnie the Moocher” by Cab Calloway, with a solo by senior Owen Fox-Whelpton. Mr. Torrence gave an introductory speech and Ms. Richardson was the main adult speaker this month. Senior Trinity Rich read the poem “Oluwa Seun.” Students including Charlotte Krisetya, Kayla Schifferle, Jelani Massey, Asseyah Walker, Ben Southworth, Essah Goumou, and Zoe Edelman shared the stories of significant figures from history. Senior Ryann Mellion and junior Hawa Sturr sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” by James Weldon Johnson. The Honors choice also performed the song “Chile Con Carne” by The Real Group and freshman Brandon Souverain performed “Harlem Shadows” by Claude McKay. The stage was adorned with artwork by art teacher Ms. Coleman of historical figures, musicians and leaders like Malcolm X, Bob Marley, Nina Simone, and Angela Davis, and Adinkra Artwork created by Ms. Richardson. The event was a collaborative chance to celebrate and honor culture as a school community through art, music, philosophy, and spoken word.

The freshmen took part in science fair last Thursday. Each showcased his or her original research and the steps they took to design and implement an experiment and collect data. The winners were Charlotte Krisetya, Zoe Woods-Arthur, and Henry Batkin. Honorable mentions went to Sam Regardie, Madison Davis, Genaba Diallo, and Claire Emanuel. The winners will also participate in the spring city-wide STEM fair, in which they will again exhibit their research and compete against students throughout the city for various prizes.

Upper Schoolers took part in the annual Poetry Out Loud competition, culminating in the final round of competitions on Wednesday. In each class, judges selected the students most skilled at reciting poetry with accuracy, emotion, and style. The final competition was judged by several different teachers and Ms. Smith. The winner with sophomore Kayla Park. Second place went to senior Dakota Turnage. Third place was a tie between junior Jalen Richardson and freshman Genaba Diallo. Kayla will not proceed to compete in the city-wide Poetry Out Loud Competition. Kayla performed the poems “Diameter” by Michele Y. Burke, and “Time does not bring relief; you have lied,” by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
