Washington Latin teacher Mr. Whitchurch and 8th grader Lola Orlove-Rodriguez both left the competition in the dust at the Potomac River Run Half Marathon over the weekend. Latin teacher Mr. Whitchurch took first overall among men, and second place overall. Lola finished in 10th place overall, beating many adult women entrants with a time of 1:58. It was a family affair for Lola’s clan, with her father and brother also participating. Lola also participates in the cross country team, frequently practicing with the high school team.
Sixth graders in Mr. Staten’s civics class took part in a celebration of Ancient Egypt on Monday. This festival imitates aspects of an Egyptian ceremony that celebrated a pharaoh’s rule. Animals, like wolf gods, were part of this festival historically, and Egyptians wore robes made of animal skins. However, 6th graders made their own costumes, celebrating various Egyptian leaders including King Tut, Ramses, and Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh. Civics class studies the history of societies, both in ancient and modern times.
As part of their summer reading assessment on the fictional book Hudu, 6th graders in Ms. Moten and Ms. Reed’s classes recently completed original short stories and comics. These narratives showcased students’ understanding of character development, plot, conflict, climax, and resolution. Student-generated topics included animal fantasies, magic, and mystery. Students in 6th grade have also been exploring narrative with family-generated narratives about students’ lives and childhoods.
Seniors went into the woods last Friday for a double overnight at Western Maryland 4H Education Center. The two day, two-night event with all senior advisors included team building games, solo written reflections, card games, canoe activities, hikes, and advisory competition.
Along with the recent high school-wide trips to the ropes course at Sandy Springs, this 4H trip allows students time to interact outdoors in nature, build esprit de corps with their grades and advisories, learn to build trust with a wide group of friends, and expand their sense of confidence and community.
