Ms. Smith will hold the first monthly meeting of teachers to have an academic soiree. She and Ms. Coleman will lead a discussion on the first chapter of Clint Smith’s “How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America.”

Senior Eleanor Ashdown will travel to Nottingham, England this week, representing Team USA for the Brittania Cup in synchronized skating. Eleanor has been skating with the Washington Figure Skating Club, DC Edge Junior USA. At the end of the month, she will also attend the French Cup in Rouen, France.

The varsity boys’ basketball beat the Capitol City Eagles, the varsity team’s 4th win in a row. The score was 43-38. The coaches are Kortlen Coleman, Chris Coleman, and Malik Rashid.

Creativity was on display this week, first with the upper school student lead Open Mic, called “The Hook,” and with the Visual Arts Show. Thursday’s show featured the work of 7th and 8th graders and upper schoolers. Ms. David and Ms. Coleman’s classes showed off their work from the semester, using graphite, acrylic, and pencils.

Seniors Mansur Diallo and Jackson Lewis learned before break that they had earned the four year full-tuition Posse Scholarship to Bucknell University. Since the first graduating class in 2012, 14 students from Washington Latin have qualified for the Posse Scholarship. Washington, D.C ‘s Posse schools include Bucknell, Pepperdine, Lafayette, The University of Rochester, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Lewis & CLarke College, and the University of the South-Sewanee. For more information about the Posse Scholarship, look at the website. Senior Brandon Souverain was the first Washington Latin student to receive the QuestBridge Scholarship. He will receive a full ride to Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.
