The varsity tennis team coached by fifth grade math teacher Ms. Kolb played several hard-fought matches this week, losing by a single match to Field School. Freshman Abby Hawkinson won her match, and the doubles team of eighth grader Neri Portillo-Marchiori and junior Kiran Mampara won the doubles match.

The middle school track team, coached by Mr. Green and Mr. Berger, powered through a recent meet, winning first place for several events. In the field events, Jocelyn Gill again took first place in the shot put and long jump, Aram Gabriel took first in the high jump, and Justin Briggs took third. Charlie Batkin finished first place in the 800M by 0.16 seconds, and Madelyn Zeller finished second in the 800M, falling 0.42 seconds behind the winner of the race. The boys’ 4 x 800M team took first place by a whopping 14 seconds, including Ben Hitt, Charlie Batkin, Zeke Schmidgall and Cooper campus student Shawn Walker! The girls 4x800M team finished third and included Avis Weeden, Kaelyn Eutsler, Siena Kepner, and Lia Simone Valentine. The girls’ 4x100M relay team (Zara Ferguson, Joi Young, Avis Weeden, and Jocelyn Gil) and the 4x200M team (Joi Young, Zara Ferguson, Sienna Douglas, and Neila Wright) both finished fourth. In the 1600M, Madelyn Zeller took 4th overall, running a 6:45 mile time!

The varsity girls lacrosse team, coached by Mr. Torrence won their first game of the season, beating EL Haynes 13-2. Several players scored goals including Senior co-captains Audrey Kim and Layla Axam. Sophomores Summer Romney and Cate Shepherd scored, and 8th graders Rina Saxon and Lyla Kramer, also scored. The eighth graders including Raine Montgomery-Vielmo, and Sarah Murphy, were brought up to the varsity team due to absences from the choir trip. Junior Sylvie Mogul played her first game as goalie and blocked many shots, only allowing two goals the whole game. The team followed up with a big win against School Without Walls on Thursday, 13-4.

Middle schoolers at Second Street took part in the fourth and final assembly of the year, focusing on the theme of growth. Seventh grade English teacher Ms. Peale reflected on her father’s impact on her life, and eighth grader Giselle spoke about internal and external growth and learning independence. Other highlights of the assembly included the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Latin teachers sharing winners of the National Latin exam. Students also took the chance to shout out their peers for being supportive friends. Finally, teachers in each grade shared the winners of this month’s merits. The assemblies allow students and faculty a chance to assess the previous quarter, think about relationships and honor effort and growth.

Cooper Campus students took part in a Yoga activity in the park for the Arts Block. Fifth grade English teacher Ms. Gans and sixth grade teacher Ms. Adeosun took their arts elective to use the greenspace off the Metro Branch Trail near the Rhode Island Ave metro stop. Students enjoyed some beautiful sunlight for their asanas!
