COMMUNITY

A Model of Diversity
Unlike the majority of DC public schools, Washington Latin is diverse in every way. Our demographics mirror those of the city. Our success as a school is important to the families who have entrusted their children to our care. It is also important for our city and nation as a whole. We serve as an example of a school successfully serving a diverse community of students with an academically demanding program and a strong community. We are proud to be an exemplar of the best of public education.

A Culture of Respect and Warmth
Student life at Washington Latin involves rigorous academics, a warm and open community, and a wide range of student activities, both in and out of school. Our school leaders know that our school culture is important to our school’s success, and we believe building a supportive environment for everyone is just as important as focusing on our academic results.

Sense of Belonging
Our robust sense of community is cultivated through our approach and a commitment to cultivating a spirit of connection, respect and support for all.
Personal Attention
We have small classes – a maximum of 20 and an average of 16 – that allow our teachers and students to get to know each other as individuals. Our strong advising system and college counseling program mean that we can write recommendations that reflect a deep understanding of each student’s capabilities as a scholar and a member of the community.
Commitment to Community
We hire faculty and staff who love working with young people and who have the subject-matter expertise we need. We encourage faculty to know their students, engaging with them beyond the classroom – at lunch, during athletic games, and in small group tutorials after school. The result is a culture based on mutual respect and affection, one of our greatest strengths we work to nurture every day at Washington Latin.
