UPDATE: With thanks for your patience, we have finished processing all of the requests we’ve received for Kids Ride Free cards and closed the request form. We have many unclaimed cards so if you or your student requested a card and your student has not received it, please have them pick it up from Ms. Keyri Flores at the front desk as soon as possible. If you haven’t yet requested a new card, you can do so at the front desk.
Keep in mind that the 2025-2026 cards expire on SEPTEMBER 30. Student cards are automatically cancelled when a new card is assigned.
KRF RULES
All DC public school students – attending both DCPS and DC Public Charter Schools – may request and receive a Kids Ride Free Card in the first few weeks of school to use all school year. Each card is assigned to an individual student (school staff will do this online through DDoT’s system.)
Please see information below, including information provided by the District Department of Transportation about the rules of this program:
- KRF cards are always free to eligible students (i.e., first card and any replacement cards).
- KRF card is primarily for travel to and from school and school-related activities.
- Students must tap the KRF card on the faregate or farebox target every time they travel.
- Flashing the card to Metro or DC Circulator staff is never permitted.
- IMPORTANT! While students may add their KRF cards to their mobile (phone) wallet and use that system for entering/exiting Metro, they should also carry their physical card with them at all times to show authorities. There have been reports of students being detained for using the mobile wallet, which shows a $0 balance (because Kids Ride FREE). To avoid such issues, be sure to have the card itself.
- If a student forgets or loses their KRF card, they MUST pay the regular fare to ride Metrorail, Metrobus or DC Circulator until they find their card or obtain a replacement card.
