Cooper Middle School will be participating in the Battle of the Books! Read about the competition – and how you can support our team!
Battle of the Books is a city-wide quiz-bowl competition that puts students’ reading skills to the test. Students at each competing school form teams of up to five students each, read as many of the 10 chosen books as possible, and then compete in a virtual, DC-wide Kahoot Quiz for top billing. The top three winning schools will get a trophy and serious bragging rights.
Students register at the Cooper Library by January 29, 2026. The competition takes place virtually on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 1:00 pm in the Library – complete with pizza for the competitors! Here are the details:
WHAT
A quiz-bowl style competition against other D.C. middle schools using Kahoot! with 10 questions from each of the 10 books. Here is how it works:
- Each student reads as many of the 10 books as possible! The goal is to make sure that every book has been read by someone on the team.
- Student competitors may read on their own, with friends, via audio book or physical book, or form a student-lead B.O.B. book club to motivate each other.
- Students are encouraged to take notes as they read. Ms. Wolfson will provide a notes packet.
- Students may also create practice questions as they read to prepare themselves and their teammates for the city-wide competition. Ms. Wolfson will provide example questions.
- Initially, teams will check-in once a month with Ms. Wolfson to make sure we’re all on track.
- At the end of April, we’ll start meeting weekly as a B.O.B. group. We’ll set goals for finishing any remaining books as well as have practice Kahoots with the quiz questions we’ve created.
WHO
Each school can have up to three teams of five (15 students per school max).
- Teams can range from two to five people.
- Teams can be groups of friends, or a mix-match of people.
- Ms. Wolfson will work with students to get the teams organized!
WHEN
