Washington Latin is a diverse-by-design network of schools, founded on the belief that all students deserve a challenging, rigorous education and that our academic model relies on a diversity of voices in an integrated community.

Since the beginning, Washington Latin has sought to build a diverse community of students and faculty. Each year, we have enrolled students from all eight Wards of DC, and the diversity of our student body reflects the community at large in Washington DC.

We consider a truly integrated school community to be necessary to accomplish our model of classical education. Our diverse, close-knit community is essential to Washington Latin’s program. It is central to our model that our students develop the ability to discuss ideas and make intellectual and moral decisions within a diverse community with a range of perspectives.

A sense of belonging

We are known for our warm, welcoming community that offers respect and support for all. We encourage and model deep engagement, and each member of our faculty is asked to “engage in the life of the school” in employment letters. Washington Latin encourages the same for our students.

  • The advisory system is central to our model, offering every student a “go-to adult” for academic issues or social-emotional concerns. We encourage participation in extra-curricular activities, such as one of our more than 30 athletic teams or a wellness class.
  • Students in all grades may choose to join one of the dozens of clubs offered during lunch, each one initiated by students themselves and ranging from knitting to Black Lives Matter.
  • A range of arts activities engage hundreds of our students, including in theater productions and musical performance groups, which offer opportunities to seek beauty and serve the common good as part of a team.

In addition to other kinds of data, we track student engagement and well-being to ensure the personal, as well as academic, growth of all our students.
