We are making some changes to advisory at 2nd Street to ensure we have all students fully participating in this important part of every school day. This year, both Middle School (6-8) and Upper School students will receive a grade for advisory. Read on for more information!
What is Advisory?
Advisory is a time for shared community amongst a subset of students and an adult. This space is one for information sharing, character building, and community engagement.
- For 7th & 8th graders, Advisory meets from 8:10 am – 8:20 am each morning.
- For 5th & 6th graders, Advisory meets from 8:10 am – 8:20 am on Mondays and Fridays; it meets from 8:10 am – 8:25 am on Tuesdays – Thursdays.
- We greet students, do a general wellness check, review the Daily Bulletin, check uniform, and ensure students are ready for the school day .
What is Advisory Lunch?
- Each Friday, we have advisory lunch (sometimes this is adjusted based on events of the week).
- This is a time for advisories to build community and relationships.
- Some advisory lunches will also include school-wide initiatives (e.g., Panorama survey)
Why is there a new Advisory grading system?
Advisory has always been a critical piece of supporting studentship and building community.
- In recent years, we have seen a decline in punctuality. This year, we are making changes.
- Advisory is pass/fail; you must earn at least 64% of the total points to pass.
- For 8th graders, advisory grades will be tied to earning points in 8th Grade Olympics.
CATEGORY | 1 POINT | 0 POINTS |

What if a student is absent for the day or arrives late to school?
- Unexcused absence or tardy = 0 points
- Excused absence or tardy = Verified exemptions accounted for at grading deadlines
- We will account for the excused absences at the interim and final grading times.
How will students and families know about their Advisory grade?
- Advisors will enter points (up to 4 a day) into DeansList Weekly Reports. Weekly Reports are sent out on Mondays and include the earned points for the previous week.
- At both the interim and end of each quarter, grades (Pass or Fail) will be entered into PowerSchool.
