Bibliothèque Anna Julia Cooper

Cooper Library is open to all enrolled Washington Latin Cooper students. By being an enrolled student you are automatically allowed to check out books so come in, explore the collection and find your next great read!

• LOCATION
  • La bibliothèque Cooper se trouve dans le bâtiment du lycée du campus Anna Julia Cooper de Washington Latin. C'est la première pièce que l'on voit en entrant par l'entrée principale, rue Harewood.
• HOURS
  • The Library and circulation (checking books in and out) is open during recess, tutorial, and during Study Hall and Executive Functioning with a Library Pass from your teacher.
  • Nota bene: occasionally Mrs. Wolfson will be teaching classes in the library during a recession time. When this happens, students will have to go to another approved recess location.
• BOOK RETURN
  • Students may return books at the circulation desk or in the blue Book Return Bin located in the Middle School front lobby.

• CHECK OUT (borrowing a book)
  • Books must be checked out at the circulation desk by Mrs. Wolfson or a trained, on-duty Student Librarian.
  • Students may check out up to 2 books at a time for a two-week period.
  • Students may renew a book for another two-week period if there is not a hold on the item.
• CHECK IN (returning a book)
  • Students must return all books within 14 days from the date the book was checked out (unless renewed).
• OVERDUES (Late Books)
  • Students will receive almost-due notices 3 days before a book is due.
  • Students will receive overdue notices at
    • 2 weeks & 2 days
    • 3 weeks
    • 4 weeks
  • There are no daily fines for overdue books though there is a Lost/Damaged Book Policy to ensure effective and fair collection management, and to promote student accountability.
  • If students have overdue books, they will not be able to check out more books until either 1) overdue books are returned, or 2) they complete a Lost/Damaged Book Policy procedure.

When a student loses or damages a book, they will have 3 options for replacing the book. Students will not be allowed to check out any books until they complete one of the options below.

• Buy the book from a retailer and deliver it to Mrs. Wolfson.
  • Mrs. Wolfson recommends Bookshop.org, a platform that connects buyers with local independent book stores.
• Pay a flat fee: $15 for paperback and $20 for hardcover.
  • Families may use this link to make payments through MySchoolBucks. Click “Buy now” to log in and then see a drop down menu to choose the $15 paperback fee or the $20 hardcover fee.
• Complete service hours in the library.
  • 1 tutorial per 1 paperback book.
  • 2 tutorials per 1 hardcover book.
  • Scheduling will be arranged directly between the student, their caregiver(s), and Mrs. Wolfson.

Mrs. Wolfson loves donations! Please email her directly to arrange. Books must be:

• In near-new condition.
• Age and reading level appropriate for the ages served (10-18)
• Whatever we cannot use will be donated.

At the start of each new school year, we will hold the application process for becoming a Student Librarian and Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer. Advisors will pass out the application form which will be due back to your advisor by the end of September (exact date announced at the start of each new year).

• Bibliothécaires étudiants will complete training with Ms. Wolfson in circulation, shelving, and general library maintenance. Student Librarians will “work” 1-2 recesses per week for the whole school year.
• Adopt-a-Shelfers will commit to “adopting” a shelf in the library for the whole school year. They will visit their shelf once a week to tidy it up. This includes putting books in alphabetical order, straightening up the books, and pushing them forward so that students can easily read the spines.
• Both roles will require 1-2 training sessions after school. Training sessions will occur in early October.

Everyone is welcome! Come to every meeting or only a few. Your presence is always appreciated and enjoyed.

• Library Club meets on the 2nd Monday of every month, 3:05-3:45pm, in the Library. Help Mrs. Wolfson maintain library materials, create & build engaging programming, craft book displays, and help build a joyful culture of reading at Cooper Campus. 
  • 10th grade students may inquire about training to be on the Cover Crew. These Club members are trained on covering and repairing library books.

Each spring Latin holds a hybrid book fair with local book store, East City Bookshop. Customers may shop both teacher wishlists and do personal shopping from their entire inventory (either in-person or online, hence hybrid). 20% of the total pre-tax purchase will be donated back to Cooper Library.

• Help us grow our library collection! Purchases from Mrs. Wolfson’s wishlist + the 20% donation goes a long way to grow our young collection.

Re-energize your late-spring hump by participating in our March Madness Tournament!

• Mrs. Wolfson determines the 16 most borrowed books and pits them against each other using sports brackets and single-elimination rounds until a grand winner is determined. Those who predicted the correct winner gets a mystery goodie bag!
• How it works:
  • Blank bracket sheets distributed in Advisories (example).
    • Each student takes 2 blank bracket sheets and fills them out identically, 1 to be handed into Mrs. Wolfson and 1 to keep to reference as you vote.
  • Over several weeks, students will vote via a Google Form sent to their Latin inbox at the beginning of each week (5 Rounds of voting). 
  • Every Monday we’ll announce round winners et send out the next round of voting via email.
• Example of our voting schedule from spring, 2026:
  • Friday March 20 – Students submit their completed bracket to the library
  • Monday March 23 – Round 1 Voting gets emailed to all.
  • Friday March 27 – Round 1 Voting closes midday.
  • Monday April 6  – Round 1 Book Winners announced in Weekly Bulletin + displayed on giant tournament bracket board on the wall just outside the library. Round 2 Voting gets emailed to all.
  • Friday April 10 – Round 2 Voting closes midday.
  • Monday April 13 – Round 2 Book Winners announced. Round 3 Voting gets emailed to all.
  • Friday April 17 – Round 3 Voting closes midday.
  • Monday April 20 – Round 3 Book Winners announced. Round 4 Voting gets emailed to all.
  • Friday April 24 – Round 4 Voting closes midday.
  • Monday April 27th – WINNING BOOK + STUDENT(S) ANNOUNCED in Weekly Bulletin and on the giant bracket in the library hallway.
