Slam Fans

Sixth graders took part in a poetry slam, reading their original work on the theme of transformation. Ms. Reed’s English classes met with Regie Cabico, a poet and spoken word artist and created their own work through a partnership with the DC Arts & Humanities Collaborative and the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. Students encouraged their peers and provided emotional support as they read their work aloud.

Staying Human in a Digital World

Mr. Banks started a new class in Digital Humanities for upper schoolers. The class considers how students express themselves using digital content.  Students post a blog twice a week, engaging with essential questions, such as “What does it mean to be human?” Students also read philosophers like Nietzsche and Kant and curate collections of online material on the topic. Students use a multi-media curation site called Wakelet, using videos, images, tweets, text, and quotes. They maintain digital collections and blogs, and write an essay about new information they put in their collections. The class is like a digital sister for Mr. Clausen’s Honor Humanities Humanities class, and several children are enrolled in both.

#Squad Goals

For the fourth year in a row, the girls varsity soccer team won the Petworth Cup. The team, helmed by math teacher Mr. Richardson, beat Cardoza High School 6 to 0, and then beat E.L. Haynes. Assistant coach is Bito Mujal, a Washington Latin alum from the class of 2013.

4H 4YourHeart

At the annual senior trip to the 4H campgrounds in Maryland, seniors played games, spent time outdoors, and did trust activities in their advisories. The event bookends senior year with the spring trip to Camp Letts right before graduation. These two events help build camaraderie and class identity for the seniors and help them reflect on the rites of passage and upcoming challenges of the year.

Daring Debaters

The Great Debaters began their season this weekend with a national tournament at Georgetown Day School. On Friday and Saturday, ninth graders Jackson Lewis, D’Andre Person, Brandon Souverain, and Maxwell Burton participated in six rounds of policy debate arguing that USFG should substantially reduce Foreign Military Sales and/or Direct Commercial Sales of arms from the United States. The students learned arguments that they will hear on the debate circuit and received feedback that will set them up for success throughout the year. The club is advised by reader teacher Ms. Lee-Bey.

The boys came in third behind Basis and DCI with strong performances by Lucas Rohde, who won the race overall by nearly two minutes. Other strong runners included Will Batkin, Preston Orlander, and Maccabi Epstein.  The team is coached by math teacher Mr. O’Brien and Latin teacher Mr. Starnes.
