Nature Calls

Fifth graders headed to Calleva for an outdoor adventure last week. The Maryland-based outdoor campgroups were established to provide outdoor team building opportunities for schools. Students took part in a zipline, swings, and moved through various trust building activities to bond and build team spirit. Middle school students often reflect on the trip as a first chance to unite with their entire grade and feel like a close-knit community.

Soccer Stars Score Some More

The middle school girls soccer team continued their undefeated season with a win Tuesday against Capitol City Public Charter School.  The score was 4-1 with goals by seventh graders Niamh O’Donovan and Kylie Emanuel and two goals scored by Dami Akinsanya. The team has also bested private schools Brookwood and Oakcrest.

Healthy Hearts

The Upper School health elective took a trip to a gym called F45 to take a class with former Washington Latin dean Jason Vanterpool. The private class was the culmination of the Fitness and Nutrition Unit.  The class is taught by upper school director Ms. Brady.

Assembly Home Run

For the first upper school assembly of the year, students and teachers spoke on the topic of “Coming Home.” The Latin Jazz Band performed “Any Moment Now,” By Scott Ninmer, and senior Owen Fox-Whelpton performed “My Hometown” by Bruce Springsteen. Latin and Science teacher Ms. Dorsey spoke about her return to Latin as a full-time fifth grade teacher this year after several years of teaching sixth grade Latin and two years of working as a long-term substitute. She thanked the teachers and students, noting “You all have taught me to be patient and more understanding. You all have taught me to love over 1000 different personalities . You all have exposed me to all these unique differences and that’s why I’m still here.” Teachers delivered various merit awards to students, and former Latin student and current Latin teacher Mr. Starnes spoke about returning to work at his alma mater. Senior MK Wilson wrote a poem called “Baseball.” and Mr. Anderson reflected on how Washington Latin has become his home. 

The Play’s the Thing

The Washington Latin Theatre department organizes a fall play and a spring musical. Students are working on rehearsals for the Nov 21-23 performances of the Neil Simon play “Rumors”, which has been double-cast to provide ample performance opportunities. This year the spring semester musical will be “Legally Blonde.” Auditions will take place October 15th and 16th for the musical comedy, which follows last year’s successful performance of “The Music Man.”

Soccer Stars

The middle school girls soccer team won a stunning victory over Oakcrest School, finishing 5 to 0. Eighth grader Sylvie Mogul scored four times and eighth grader Dami Akinsanya scored once. The team, composed of seventh and eighth grade players, is coached by new seventh grade science teacher Ms. Hinkson.
