The District’s public charter schools are part of a growing “parent choice” system. Parents from throughout the District can now chose the school that best matches their own vision of what a school should be and what they want to provide for their children.
In this environment, it is incumbent on every charter school to clearly define its academic and extra-curricular programs—and the students who are most likely to succeed in them.
As a public school Washington Latin is a new and exciting option for every family in the District of Columbia. Its opening in the fall of 2006 represents the chance of a lifetime for families who desire a classical education for their children.
Washington Latin’s Mission & School Description states that, “The School will seek young women and men of good character who are eager to learn and willing to work.” What does that mean?
“Latin” offers a rigorous, literature-based, college preparatory program. While the School offers a wide array of academic supports, there will be no grade inflation and no social promotion. Therefore, in order to be successful, every student will have to perform at a high level.
The qualities that define the successful “Latin” student are intellectual curiosity, self-motivation, personal discipline, and a strong work ethic. Success at Latin requires of every student the ability to postpone gratification and the inner toughness to “get the job done.”
