It has already been a great year at in our new library, thanks to the participation from our young readers and their families!
Update: DC Public Library Card Initiative
Reading is transformative. In the words of Frederick Douglass, “once you learn to read, you will forever be free.” This principle is one that drives us at Latin as we navigate through ancient texts and modern ideas. Our library at Cooper has helped us through this, and the DC Public Library initiative expands our access to the wealth of knowledge we may find in books.
Thank you to the families who have submitted their child’s public library card number. For those who need a DC Public Library (DCPL) card, we have been working hard during advisories to fill out applications! Some students are reporting that they have a DCPL card at home but have not yet submitted the number into the google form. Use the button below to apply for a DCPL card, or to share your child’s existing card number.
Part of the reason we are collecting card numbers is so that students can easily access them during school to use for research, homework, and discovery. DCPL has amazing, free online research databases such as BritannicaSchool, Gale in Context, JSTOR, ScienceFlix, et so much more! *Your child’s card number will only be used by your child.
Borrowed books
At the beginning of the year, all students cycled through Cooper Library for a Library Norms & Behaviors lesson with me. At that class, they learned about our policy for lost and damaged books. We’ve had a few lost books since then and I am so impressed with how our students have handled it! They have Trusted Courageously that they can tell me what happened and they have Served the Common Good by taking accountability for the lost item. Well done, Cooper students! And thank you parents for encouraging them to be responsible with their borrowed supplies from the library!
