Diving into Robotics

The 2nd Street Underwater Robotics Team, known as the “Sea Lions,” attended the MATE 2023 MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL COMPETITION on Friday and Saturday in Norfolk, VA. The club is advised by Mr. Keller and Mr. Bruhier, who work with the team throughout the year to design, build, test and improve their robots so that they are “seaworthy” and able to perform at the tournaments.

Seeing the City

Every grade at the 2nd Street Campus had a one-day field trip last week. The trips allowed them to take a break from test-taking and final exam preparation and see a part of the city. Adventures included a trip to the Smithsonian Museum on the National Mall for fifth graders, a trip to Sofive Rockville for the sixth graders, a trip to the African American History and Culture Museum and a tour of U Street Corridor for the seventh graders, trips to the Zoo, a hike, and a movie for the eighth graders, a trip to SkyZone for ninth grade, a tour of local colleges for sophomores, a community service trip for juniors and a Rock Creek Park gathering for seniors.

Washington Latin earned 1st place at Saturday’s US Chess Center’s scholastic chess tournament! The Washington Latin team was proudly represented by Elias Gonzalez, a 7th grader at 2nd Street campus, Oskar Winkler Thomas, a 6th grader at Cooper campus, and Nikolas Fertakis-Perkins, a 5th grader at Cooper campus.  Their combined scores earned a team trophy for Washington Latin. This is one of several recent tournaments that our Latin students have competed in, leaving with individual or team trophies!
